How To Paint A Bathroom

How To Painting Your Bathroom

When choosing a paint for your bathroom, it’s important to choose one that has been formulated to withstand high levels of humidity, such as a specialist bathroom paint or an emulsion that contains vinyl.  Eggshell is commonly used in bathrooms as it’s more hardwearing that standard emulsion, and can be used on walls and woodwork.  Gloss paint is usually used on woodwork, as it offers an attractive and durable finish.

Water-based or acrylic woodwork paints are much nicer to work with than oil-based ones, and they are quick-drying, so you can get the job finished sooner.  As a general rule, giving all surfaces an extra coat gives a better and longer lasting finish.  Put some thought into choosing the color for your walls, as your painted surfaces will act as a frame for your bathroom fixtures.

As with any painting job, it pays to use the best quality brushes and rollers, as this will help you achieve a better result.  It’s useful to have paintbrushes of different sizes, such as a small one for doing all the fiddly bits around various fittings and fixtures, and a large one for the open surfaces.

Taking the time with your preparation is important if you want to achieve the best results.  Wash down the walls and ceiling with sugar soap, and scrape off and sand down any loose or flaky areas.  Make sure all your surfaces are clean and dry before you begin painting, and remove any obstacles from the bathroom, such as freestanding cabinets or shelves.  To protect your bathroom from paint splashes, put dustsheets over your floor and fixtures.  For a clear division between your walls and tiles, stick masking tape around the edges of your tiles.

When you’re painting, attention to detail can make all the difference.  For instance, if you’ve got pipes that aren’t boxed in, painting them the same color and the walls helps to camouflage them.  You can also paint your bath panel, to give it a fresh new look.
