School Bathroom Design Ideas

Cool School Bathroom Ideas

Decorating Bathroom Ideas For Your School

When most people think of school bathrooms they conjure the notion of a dirty, dingy set of stalls perhaps in a decidedly unattractive avocado or mint green. You may remember bathrooms at your school as a less than aesthetically pleasing place to be. This, however, doesn't have to be the case. There are a number of ways to turn boring old bathrooms into hip, modern spaces full of hygiene boosting devices, environmentally friendly products and eye-pleasing images. Does this Spark an idea?

Automated Devices

Help improve students hygiene and take steps towards saving the environment by installing automated devices in the bathroom. Auto-flush toilets, motion sensor sinks, automatically dispensing soap pumps and motion sensitive hand dryers all allow students to do their business hands free thereby reducing the transmission of germs from one student to another. These tools also ensure that no water is left on, excessive soap use is discouraged and hand dryers blow only as long as necessary. By installing automated devices in your school bathroom, you will not only help improve the health of your students and the environment, but also create a sleek, technological and modern restroom facility.

Stall Talk Newsletters

Turn restroom time into knowledge building time by placing stall talk newsletters in each bathroom stall. Install inexpensive plastic frames on the insides of bathroom doors and regularly place informative reading material into them. This practice is common at stadiums or concert venues where similar frames are frequently used to display sponsors' advertisements. In a school, these advertisements can be replaced with health and wellness related fact sheets, the most current edition of the school newspaper and lists of riddles and jokes. Students enjoy reading these little tidbits and the placement of this reading material adds brightness and excitement to the dull bathroom setting.

Mirror Messages

Give students something to see in the mirror, other than their reflection. Place messages on the bathroom mirrors that students can read while they wash up. This will encourage students to spend a larger amount of time washing their hands which will help prevent the spread of disease in the school. Self-esteem building messages of interesting environmental factoids make great additions to school mirrors. You can either have these messages permanently painted on the mirrors, or instead mix it up regularly and allow staff or a trusted group of students to use water-soluble markers and regularly paint new text on the mirrors.

Creative Painting Techniques

You can turn bathroom walls into a veritable mini-museum by employing some creative painting techniques. Use bold colors throughout the bathroom as these colors will brighten the space and catch student interest. Also, employ the assistance of the art club or local artists and ask them to help give your plain bathroom some pizzaz by painting a mural on one wall or decorate the insides of the bathroom stalls. If you really want to create a memorable restroom, you can use faux painting techniques and decorate each stall in a different fashion allowing bathroom users to feel as if they have stepped into a time machine every time they visit the commode. Paint one stall to resemble a bright, sunny, wild-flower-filled meadow, paint another to look as if you are in an old world castle complete with rough, gray bricks and a drawbridge exit.

Tips For Using Wallpaper In A Bathroom

Using Wallpaper In A Bathroom

Wallpaper is not the obvious choice of decoration for most bathrooms, because the high humidity levels can cause paper to lift and peel.  However, ff you decide to use wallpaper in your bathroom, there are a few things to bear in mind.  Vinyl wallpaper has the benefit of being easy to wipe clean.  However, water runs off the shiny surface, so if your bathroom is prone to condensation, it will be more obvious.  Standard wallpaper isn’t so easy to clean, but won’t show up condensation droplets as much.  However, it isn’t as durable as vinyl papers.  The problems associated with condensation can be minimized if you ensure your bathroom has adequate ventilation.

If you’ve already got wallpaper on your bathroom walls, you will have to remove it first, as papering over it won’t work very well.  It makes sense to strip your wallpaper before you install your new bathroom fixtures, so they don’t get covered in the mess.  To strip wallpaper, pull away as much as you can while it’s dry.  It’s often quite easy to remove the top layer in this way.  To remove the backing paper underneath, soak it with hot water for a few minutes before using a scraper to peel it off the wall.  If you have a lot of stripping to do, it might be quicker to use a wallpaper steam stripper, but if your bathroom is only small, this probably wouldn’t be an economical option.

To protect your new wallpaper and extend its life, you might be able to apply a coat of emulsion glaze or matt varnish over the top.  Do a patch test first though, to make sure your particular wallpaper is suitable for this type of finish.  If you plan on tiling an area of wall, extend the wallpaper slightly into this space, so you can tile over the edges and stop the paper from lifting.  Where the wallpaper meets skirting board, applying silicone sealant in the join can help hold the paper down.

How To Paint A Bathroom

How To Painting Your Bathroom

When choosing a paint for your bathroom, it’s important to choose one that has been formulated to withstand high levels of humidity, such as a specialist bathroom paint or an emulsion that contains vinyl.  Eggshell is commonly used in bathrooms as it’s more hardwearing that standard emulsion, and can be used on walls and woodwork.  Gloss paint is usually used on woodwork, as it offers an attractive and durable finish.

Water-based or acrylic woodwork paints are much nicer to work with than oil-based ones, and they are quick-drying, so you can get the job finished sooner.  As a general rule, giving all surfaces an extra coat gives a better and longer lasting finish.  Put some thought into choosing the color for your walls, as your painted surfaces will act as a frame for your bathroom fixtures.

As with any painting job, it pays to use the best quality brushes and rollers, as this will help you achieve a better result.  It’s useful to have paintbrushes of different sizes, such as a small one for doing all the fiddly bits around various fittings and fixtures, and a large one for the open surfaces.

Taking the time with your preparation is important if you want to achieve the best results.  Wash down the walls and ceiling with sugar soap, and scrape off and sand down any loose or flaky areas.  Make sure all your surfaces are clean and dry before you begin painting, and remove any obstacles from the bathroom, such as freestanding cabinets or shelves.  To protect your bathroom from paint splashes, put dustsheets over your floor and fixtures.  For a clear division between your walls and tiles, stick masking tape around the edges of your tiles.

When you’re painting, attention to detail can make all the difference.  For instance, if you’ve got pipes that aren’t boxed in, painting them the same color and the walls helps to camouflage them.  You can also paint your bath panel, to give it a fresh new look.

Bathroom Blinds Buying Guide

Bathroom Blinds Buying Guide

It can be tricky choosing which type of window dressing would be best for your bathroom.  Blinds are generally preferred over curtains in bathrooms.  They are available in fabrics that are suitable for the high moistures levels found in bathrooms, they don’t take up as much space as curtains, and they can be easily adjusted for privacy, whilst still letting light shine in.  As a rule, when choosing a blind for your bathroom, pay particular attention to the type of fabric and opt for something that is durable and easy to clean.  Blinds are generally operated by cords, which allow them to be raised and lowered, and also allow you to control how much light is let in.

Roller blinds work by using a roller system, with the blind material being wrapped around the roller when the blind is raised.  They are operated by a single pull cord, which unrolls the material to close the blind.  This type of blind can be fitted either inside or outside the window recess.  Fitting a roller blind inside the recess can give a fitted finish, but you must take accurate measurements to make sure the fabric doesn’t brush against the walls on either side.  Usually, roller blinds are fitted to brackets attached to the window frame.  Roman blinds are similar to roller blinds, the difference being that they have horizontal battens sewn into the fabric, which fold the material up when the blind is raised.

Venetian blinds are made of horizontal slats of wood or aluminum, which connected by cords.  Unlike solid roller or Roman blinds, which are either open or closed, the slatted design of Venetian blinds means they can be adjusted to control light levels.  This makes them good for maintaining privacy in the bathroom without shutting out natural light.

Vertical blinds are similar to Venetian blinds, but instead have vertical slats.  This design enables you to control the degree of light coming into the room, but this type of blind looks more like curtains when it’s open, as it moves horizontally across the window.
